Networking Tips (Social Advice for Men & Women)

To network or not to network, that is the question! Now what is networking? Well, networking is the communicating and exchanging of ideas between people for each others benefit. Your social interactions with people can lead you to many advantages. For instance, helpful advice, free gifts, invites to parties and other events, new friendships, new job opportunities, and so much more. Before networking, you should always know your goals first. Are you at a meeting to learn, get more contacts, volunteer, or make business connections? Only visit groups that you're interested in joining so you don't waste your time. Always greet people with a smile, a firm hand shake, and with direct eye contact. Next, introduce yourself and allow the person or people you're talking to, introduce themselves. Be genuinely interested in what people have to say, and ask them questions about what their hobbies and interests are. This will lower their defenses and make them more open towards you. Remember, you have to be interested in people to make them become interested in you. Make sure to ask open ended questions that ask who, what, where, when, and how. Don't ask closed ended questions that can be answered with a yes or no. Be ready to give more than you take. People will remember the knowledge you've provided for them and will most likely return a favor. Have a clear knowledge of what services you provide, for whom you provide your services for, and what's makes you unique from the rest. Be able to communicate what you are looking for, and how others may help you. Always thank, keep it touch, and do favors for people who have helped refer you to others and your connections will develop over time.
